[M Hakan Yavuz] -- This is a study of the Gulen Movement, one of the most imaginative developments in contemporary Islam. Founded in Turkey by the Muslim thinker Fethullah Gulen, the Gulen Movement aims to disseminate.

A revelatory and game-changing narrative that rewrites everything we thought we knew about the modern history of the Islamic world. With majestic prose, Christopher de Bellaigue presents an absorbing account of the political and social reformations that transformed the lands of Islam in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Yavuz’s most recent book, “Toward an Islamic Enlightenment: The Gülen Movement” (Oxford University Press, ), is a book I find exceptionally worth reading since it provides a meticulous and comprehensive study on the background and evolution of Gülen’s ideas and the structure of the movement he has inspired.

There is common approach by the western media and the state owned media in Islamic countries towards Islamic Enlightenment and only those media which are aligned with Islamic Republic of Iran are exception. To be more explicit, the state owned media in Islamic countries like the media in western world pay little attention to question of freedom. This book tells the forgotten story of the Islamic Enlightenment. It shows us how to look beyond sensationalist headlines to foster a genuine understanding of modern Islam and Muslim culture, and is essential reading for anyone engaged with the state of the world today.

As Jonathan Israel recounts in his important history, Radical Enlightenment, "On the one hand, Islam is viewed positively, even enthusiastically, as a purified form of revealed religion, stripped of the many imperfections of Judaism and Christianity, and hence reassuringly akin to deism.

A comprehensive examination of one of modern Islam's most controversial schools of thought. Toward an Islamic Enlightenment. The Gülen Movement. Hakan Yavuz. Description. Hakan Yavuz offers an insightful and wide-ranging study of the Gulen Movement, one of the most imaginative developments in contemporary Islam.

Yavuz's most recent book, “Toward an Islamic Enlightenment: The Gülen Movement” (Oxford University Press, ), is a book I find exceptionally worth reading since it provides a meticulous and comprehensive study on the background and evolution of Gülen's ideas and the structure of the movement he has inspired.

By tracing the movement's historical and social development, the book provides a convincing narrative of how a marginalized and persecuted pietistic community evolved into a major transnational religious and social reform movement with the aim of fostering an Islamic Enlightenment.

The book's analysis and conclusions are highly relevant for not. It’s a book which I don’t altogether like. I began by being rather hostile to it, though I feel more friendly towards it now. It’s by a scholar who is part Catholic theologian and is not particularly well disposed towards the Enlightenment, and especially not toward what I would call the Radical Enlightenment.

great philosophers of European enlightenment, defines enlightenment as “Man’s emergence form a self-imposed immaturity.” An enlightened man for Kant was “one who had the courage to use his own understanding.” In Islamic terms, this means one is competent to do one’s own ijtihad (independent thinking).

Kant was seeking to liberate. "This book is an enlightenment in itself, and a salient one in this age when everyone seems to feel entitled to a firm opinion about Islam and Muslims." (David Aaronovitch The Times) "A highly original and informative survey of the clashes between Islam and modernity in Istanbul, Cairo and Tehran in the last two hundred years.

s: Ten years after co-editing his first book on the Gülen movement, Hakan Yavuz, a leading scholar on Turkish society, brings his academic prowess and careful observations to bear on this dynamic phenomenon in Toward an Islamic Enlightenment: The Gülen Movement.1 This well-timed book not only provides an update on the growth of the movement over the last decade; it also offers the deepest.

Towards an Islamic Enlightenment shows the many facets of the movement, arguing that it is marked by an identity paradox: despite its tremendous contribution to the introduction of a moderate, peaceful, and modern Islamic outlook-so different from the Iranian or Saudi forms of radical and political Islam-the Gulen Movement is at once liberal.

Towards a New Enlightenment? A Transcendent Decade. This book examines where the great scientific and technological advances of the last decade are leading us .He's here tonight to discuss his newest book The Islamic enlightenment the struggle between faith and reason to modern times double eggs book gives an account of the political and social reformation that transformed the lands of Islam in their 19th and early 20th centuries.

Sceptics will inevitably call the book’s title, “The Islamic Enlightenment”, naive or oxymoronic. Still, having focused for a number of years on Iran and modern Turkey.
